Wildlife to spot in June

In this, our second joint blog with Coigach & Assynt Living Landscape, we hope to give you an idea of some of our amazing wildlife to look out for in June. June can be a ‘quiet’ month for birds, from a human perspective at least, as the singing often stops for a while this month but does pick up again

May Monthly Volunteer Day

May’s volunteer day was held up at Glencanisp Lodge carrying out some path maintenance on the Glencanisp Nature Trail. It was a particularly wet day and the volunteers did a fantastic job despite this! The rain didn’t dampen spirits and singing songs kept us going! The aim of this session was to widen the path back to its original width

Tree-mendous Volunteers

Today (20th May) we held a volunteer day at Little Assynt Tree Nursery. For those of you unfamiliar with the nursery, they grow all locally sourced seeds collected by Nick and Susan (our amazing nursery team) and volunteers to produce thousands of trees for local planting projects including our Woodland Planting Project. Tasks for the volunteers today included pricking out

At the halfway point

We’re now halfway through our Landscape Partnership Scheme (where has the time gone???) so it’s time for our mid-scheme evaluation. This work, conducted on our behalf by Simon Lees of Countryside Training Partnership, will identify where we’ve been successful, what challenges there have been, and opportunities for us to make the most of the next two and a half years

Getting to Know Isle Martin with the John Muir Award

Ullapool Primary P7s were lucky with the weather today! They were hosting their John Muir Award Share day on Isle Martin for the P7s from Achiltibuie, Lochinver & Scoraig. In the morning artist Julia Barton led a CSI style investigation into several “crime scenes” found on the beach. All pupils were involved in collecting the evidence to try and determine

Battle of the seasons above, hedgerow jelly planting below

As winter and summer battled it out last Friday (3rd May) alternating between the former throwing down bitingly-cold hail showers and the latter retaliating with bright warm sunshine, eight Achiltibuie P5-7s and three nursery children were also alternating between hurrying indoors and strolling back outside as they dodged the weather extremes for the sake of warm fingers and toes, and

What to Spot: May Edition

In partnership with Assynt Field Club, we are adding a new regular blog to our website where we hope to be able to give you an idea of the wildlife that you can look out for over the next month. This could be migratory species, insects, etc. They may have hibernated over winter or species that can be seen all

Spring Clean Take 2: April Volunteer Day

As I arrived on site the heavens opened, ‘another wet beach clean’ I thought. I was wrong. By 11am the sun pushed through as volunteers started to arrive. We were all soon removing all the waterproof layers as it turned into a glorious day. We concentrated on the sandy straight of the Bay of Stoer shoreline between the rocky outcrops;

A Spring Clean for Culag Wood’s Beaches

This week we held a beach clean at Culag Woods, concentrating on the two beaches north of the White Shore. Although it had been beautiful sunshine all week, the grey skies didn’t stop our volunteers from doing a wonderful job. In just 2 hours we managed to clean two beaches of 10kilos of small pieces of fishing rope, twine and
