The challenges and joys of Outdoor learning in the North West highlands.

It can be challenging matching the weather with a suitable location and delivering the theme that schools are currently working on – here’s why? We had an interesting time last week at the Outdoor and Woodland Learning Project here in the CALL corner of the North West Highlands.  Working with Achiltibuie Nursery and Primary Schools on their woodland life cycles

A Return to Raffin

June’s monthly volunteer day was held at Raffin Beach, caring out a second beach clean on the first strip of the beach and moving onto the second. The John Muir Trust run working holidays, and this was the week they were up in Coigach and Assynt, all 10 of them joining the CALL volunteers to help clean the beach. It

Coigach Gathering 2019

Saturday saw Laura and Vickii return to the Coigach Gathering for another year. A fun filled day packed with lots of scheduled activities and amazing food. One of our stalls activities was our community survey in a map and sticker form allowing us to hear your views on how we are doing as a partnership as we go into year

Woodland Artisan: Cup Carving in June

Guest Blog: Chris Goodman, Assynt Woods I’m having to restrain myself. My cup’s been sitting in a bag with some wood shavings for 5 days now, slowly drying, and I just want to get it out and admire it. Then fill it with gin and tonic or maybe coffee (if it’s a bit early in the day) and use it.

What to Spot: July Edition

Here is the July edition of our joint blog with Assynt Field Club. Many birds are on the move this month or looking after young. We recently concluded an 8-week Mindfulness

A hill walk celebration

The P7 John Muir Award finale involved a hill walk up Quinag today. We were guided safely up the mountain by several mountain leaders, including the head teacher of Ullapool High School, Robbie McFedries who joined us to spend some quality time with next academic year’s S1s. It was wonderful seeing how the P7s from the area’s primary schools have

Twenty-nine teens, four days, and an Island

Early last Tuesday morning, twenty-nine Ullapool High School S1 students arrived on Isle Martin and set up camp for a four-day residential trip. During this time, they took part in various activities including kayaking, den-building, bird-spotting, seashore exploration, woodland immersion, and a mini-expedition to another part of the island. And there was plenty of time in the mornings and evenings

Willow Cord: Woodland Artisan Course

Guest blog by Chris Goodman, Course Leader I use timber from trees all the time, whether it’s for building and diy jobs, making spoons or as firewood – it’s an incredible material which lends itself to all sorts of uses. But recently I’m becoming more and more interested in how we can use some of the other parts of trees
