Tree-mendous Volunteers

Today (20th May) we held a volunteer day at Little Assynt Tree Nursery. For those of you unfamiliar with the nursery, they grow all locally sourced seeds collected by Nick and Susan (our amazing nursery team) and volunteers to produce thousands of trees for local planting projects including our Woodland Planting Project. Tasks for the volunteers today included pricking out

Spring Clean Take 2: April Volunteer Day

As I arrived on site the heavens opened, ‘another wet beach clean’ I thought. I was wrong. By 11am the sun pushed through as volunteers started to arrive. We were all soon removing all the waterproof layers as it turned into a glorious day. We concentrated on the sandy straight of the Bay of Stoer shoreline between the rocky outcrops;

A Spring Clean for Culag Wood’s Beaches

This week we held a beach clean at Culag Woods, concentrating on the two beaches north of the White Shore. Although it had been beautiful sunshine all week, the grey skies didn’t stop our volunteers from doing a wonderful job. In just 2 hours we managed to clean two beaches of 10kilos of small pieces of fishing rope, twine and

Monthly Volunteer Day Update

This year CALL have been running a monthly volunteer day. Each month we get together and spend a few hours helping one of The CALL projects. Our first in January unfortunately was called off due to snow and ice. The plan was to start the year with a litter pick in Culag Wood and enjoy a gentle walk. Not quite

Volunteer Training at Achlochan

This week we ran a 2-day course for the Achlochan Project volunteers to get trained in using brush-cutters and strimmers. This course was LANTRA accredited and covered maintaining the machines as well as safe usage. All the trainees passed and now are qualified to use strimmers and brush-cutters to help maintain the Achlochan site. Although the weather was brisk, we

Examples of activities we may carry out include

A walk on the wild side at Clachtoll

Another rough week of weather but the sun tried to shine for us and people came out to join myself, Andy, David and Avril on a walk around Clachtoll, learning about wildlife recording and its importance. So fully waterproofed up (just in case!), we headed out! Assynt Field Club, of which Andy, David and Avril are members, are corelating wildlife

Raffin Beach Clean Success!

At the start of the week when I looked at the weather forecast for the 13th and 14th I was sceptical if we would be able to run the beach clean with the horrible weather that was being predicted but as the week went on things started to look brighter and I headed down, hoping some brave people would join

CALL at the Coigach Gathering

On Saturday the annual Coigach Gathering kicked off with a performance from the Achiltibuie and Ullapool Pipers and were followed by many other events throughout the day such as the kids and adult hill races, welly wanging and guess the weight of the salmon. Another scorcher of a day brought crowds of locals and tourists to come and enjoy the

Tree Planting on Isle martin

Last week we held a tree planting session on Isle Martin. 1000 trees were taken by boat to our beautiful community island and planted by volunteers from John Muir Trust and the local community. It was a fantastic day with brilliant weather, all be it too hot! A mixture of native trees from locally sourced seed at Little Assynt Tree
